Going into this semester, I essentially knew nothing. I came in with only my own experiences in the American Public Education. This semester, our own Learning and Reflection Knowledge Bases (LRKB) were heavily influenced into our learning of EDC102H. We experimented with the “cloud” application Evernote that accumulates resources related to American Public Education, school reforms and really anything. Looking back, there were many struggles and achievements I, personally, have made.
First, it was an extreme adjustment for me to get used to using a new application I have never used before. At first, I did not quite understand the point of it. For example, I thought that I already had my own system going with collecting data. I have become fond of the Google Drive. I have a Chromebook, so everything on my laptop is run by chrome, so it just made it that much easier. Easier - that word came up a lot this semester for me. Although I had my own way of doing things going for me, I realized that sometimes there are more challenging ways of doing things that can be more beneficial. Through enforcing Evernote on us, it made me step outside my comfort zone and visually see that there are different ways people think, and I should be more open to them.
Although Evernote and the Web Clipper were a main focus in this course, I actually attempted to use them for other classes, as well. I have to be honest - I did not know if what I was even clipping the pages or not at first. But with practice, I was able to easily save articles or pictures that correlates with my projects in other classes.
Looking back on high school, I feel it would have been beneficial for more of us to be aware of different ways of organizing. Teachers often say, "Okay, you're in high school now - you have found your way of taking notes." Thinking of this now, I wish teachers would realize that the ways of taking notes and saving articles is evolving. Although I do feel students get into their own rhythm of their own style, I do feel like we should still be aware. I myself am a student stuck in my way of organizing with Google Drive, however, hearing of new ways of learning has sparked an interest in me. I feel like students would be more intrigued with the idea of learning when they see how technological improvement is being made every day.
This semester, I have not used Evernote and the Web Clipper "that much." However, I did test it out, explored, did not give up when I didn't understand it, and tried applying it to other classes. Instead, I think I will stick with my Google Drive ways, but apply what I have learned from these applications to my own learning. I have realized that there are many ways students think and organize and there is not one right way. I will embrace different applications that bring diversity to my future classrooms.
Clearly, this semester has been a whole learning experience about learning, for me. I have felt the excitement when I learn something new, and hope to give that feeling to my own future students.
